Targeting your ideal companies

Finding a job is alot like target practice. You have to aim at the red dot, not the entire circle.

Think Company vs position

Have you ever found yourself interested in a particular company but unable to find any advertised job openings? Frustrating, right? Don't worry, I've got some tips to help you navigate the hidden job market and get your resume in front of the right people.

First, let's talk about targeting your ideal companies. Instead of aimlessly applying to any job opening you come across, try a more strategic approach. Identify the companies you're interested in and then find recruiters who are focused on the type of roles you're interested in. This way, you can introduce yourself and express your interest in potential roles in the future.

One way to connect with recruiters at your target companies is to reach out to those with the titles "Hiring Manager ," " Recruiter,"  “Talent Acquisition” or "Sourcing Specialist." These professionals are responsible for building pipelines of talent for future roles.

Another approach is to connect with hiring managers in your field. They may be able to provide insight into upcoming job openings or even create a position for you if they see potential in your skills and experience.

And don't forget about the power of your network. You may know someone who knows about unadvertised job openings or upcoming vacancies. It only takes one conversation to change the entire trajectory of your job search.

So, instead of flooding a company's career page with applications, try these three-way networking strategies:

  • Connect with sources at target companies.

  • Connect with hiring managers in your field.

  • Create a job alert and general profile in the applicant tracking system (ATS).

Remember, people hire people, not computers. So, take the time to make meaningful connections and express your interest in future opportunities. And if you need help with your job search strategy, book a call with me today!
